Lead Us Not Into Trial or Temptation?
Does the Lord’s prayer ask the Lord to deliver us from “temptation” or from “trials”?
Consider these two translations of the Lord’s prayer at Matt 6:13:
And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one (NIV).
And do not bring us to the time of trial, but rescue us from the evil one (NRSVue).
Do we pray to be rescued from temptation into sin or do we pray to be rescued from the apocalyptic ordeal set to come upon the world?
That is a slight change, but it carries a lot of significance!
