A couple of weeks ago, Nijay Gupta announced the publication of a festschrift (i.e., celebratory writing) for Scot McKnight, entitled, Living the King Jesus Gospel: Discipleship and Ministry Then and Now, edited by Nijay K. Gupta, Tara Beth Leach, Matthew W. Bates, Drew J. Strait.
Scot McKnight is a brilliant scholar who has been teaching, mentoring, and writing for over thirty years. He was also an examiner for my PhD thesis - which he passed! Since then he has helped me get established in scholarship and given me many opportunities to edit and write for a variety of audiences. Scot has been a terrific collaborator, encourager, friend, and mentor to me. Like me, he’s also an Anglican convert, so we have many topics to talk about - esp. warning passages in Hebrews and Calvinism. He’s faithful to Jesus, his family, and his long-suffering Chicago Cubs! Seriously, Scot is one of the best guys I know in biblical studies, combining faith and scholarship. So I was naturally elated to hear that he was receiving a festschrift and I was enthused to contribute to it.
In the next post I’ll describe my contribution to this volume.
Notably, Scot has written a steady stream of both academic works but also popular-level books for the church. If you don’t know, his commentaries on Galatians, Colossians, Philemon, and James are superb, I still like his book Jesus and His Death, then there’s his book The Jesus Creed and with his daughter, Laura Barringer A Church Called Tov. His Reading Romans Backwards is a stimulating and thought-provoking book as well. Great works that merit adding to your collection.
You can also follow Scot at his substack page.
Many thanks for these kind remarks, Mike, and for all your great work in biblical and theological studies. Your Theology sits near my writing desk every day!
