This Week in Word from the Bird
Democracy. Riots. Neanderthals vs. Nazis. Assurance of Salvation. Polycarp of Smyrna.
Okay, grading is done! Now, I suspect that this week will be a big one on the political scene and I hope America does not go all “civil war” after Tuesday. But word to the wise, I’ll be the watching the live stream from The Free Press to catch the coverage.
Monday: The Problem of Democracy (Free Sign-Ups)
My review of Shadi Hamid’s The Problem of Democracy: America, the Middle East, and the Rise and Fall of an Idea.
Tuesday: The Case Against Rioting (Paid Subscribers)
Now protesting is one thing, a legit right to vent one’s spleen at our political leaders, at the system, or at “the man.” But there is a line between protesting and rioting.

Wednesday: Down Syndrome Solutions: Neanderthals or Nazis (Free Sign-Ups).
I just came across a recent study that showed that Neanderthals cared for children with Down syndrome.
Thursday: The Assurance of Salvation (Paid Subscribers)
In Romans 8, Paul brings together both divine promises of deliverance with exhortations towards faithful perseverance. Paul knows that salvation is certainly conditional. However, Paul always anchors salvation not in human action as the decisive condition, but rather, in God’s constant faithfulness, scandalous mercy, and enduring love.
Friday: Meet Polycarp (Free Sign-Ups)
My second-most-popular video on YouTube is the one I made about the Polycarp of Smyrna.
