This Week in Word from the Bird
I’m sitting here in a Penthouse in Fitzroy this evening. I’ve been busy filming some videos based on a book I’ve written on Christology. I’m soaking in the inner-city Melbourne ambiance, relaxing with a nice cup of English Breakfast tea, and preparing my substacks for the week.
Monday: Bood of the Week: Modern Genre Theory (Free Sign-Ups)
One book I’m really excited about is Andy Judd’s new book on the Bible and genre theory. Step one, forget everything you know about genre theory, because it is either wrong, or out of date by 50 years.
Tuesday: Sex vs Gender: Is a Truce Possible? (Paid Subscribers)
There should be a way to insist on the basics of biology, to safeguard rights for women based on their biology, and to accommodate people who are different, whether gender dysphoria, intersex, or non-binary. Wednesday: Discipleship and the Lord’s Supper (Free Sign-Ups).
If the meal is just a remembrance, why do we have to keep doing it so often? How many times do I have to be told to remember something? Why not just wear a cross-shaped ring or a necklace with a cross to remind myself and others that Jesus did for my sins? Maybe there is more to this meal than a mere memorial!
Thursday: Paul, Women, and Veils in Corinth (Paid Subscribers)
For me, what is easily one of the most perplexing passages in all of Scripture is 1 Corinthians 11:2-16 about women and head coverings. In particular, v. 10, “For this reason a woman ought to have authority over her head, because of the angels.” And Paul is adamant about this: “But if anyone is disposed to be contentious—we have no such custom, nor do the churches of God” (v. 16)!
