I’ve repeatedly heard it said that penal substitutionary atonement is a macabre and medieval invention that has nothing to do with the New Testament or the early church. And, I’ve heard it stated over and over again that penal substitution is the absolute center and pivot of the entire atonement theology of the New Testament. I hate to burst anybody’s bubble, but neither myths are true!
