In the Ben Witherington festschrift, Judith Gundry has an interesting article on “Resisting Aristotle: Marital Rule in 1 Corinthians 7 and the Household Codes.” She proposes that Paul seems to be using a particular Aristotlean view of equality, one defined by a kind of rotating authority.

When Jesus was asked if the Jews should pay taxes to Caesar, I don’t think the question was really about taxes, it was in fact a trap. The way Jesus avoided the trap and turned the tables on his interlocutors is very interesting.
