I immensely appreciate this measured analysis. Becoming a Territorian in the early 90’s, I am haunted by the brokenness of a culture & a country that I’d not seen before then, by ATSIC, by one after another after another aborted Indigenous health and community programme... hopeful enthusiasm that faded in the new millennium.
I know talk & policy are necessary, but there is so much vitriolic talk that threatens to take over anything constructive.
Thanks Dr. Bird for informing Christians like me(USA) from around the globe 🌎 of such and important vote for the nation of Australia 🇦🇺. I would vote yes if lived there myself.
In 1988 I worked for Northern Territory Health. One cold July night in Alice Springs I came across a young aboriginal woman roaming the streets on her own. When I asked her if she was ok she told me that she had travelled from South Australia to find her Mother whom she had been forcibly removed from in Central Australia in the late 1960s. When I asked her if she needed transport to get to her Mothers house she told me that she had no address or contact details for her but was roaming the streets hoping that her Mother might recognise her........
The heart breaks... and breaks and breaks, then breaks again......
Thanks Mike,
This is a really good analysis. Is this shareable to people not paid subscribers to your substack?
Yes, it is shareable!
Great, thank you!

Glad you liked it!

Jessica, thanks, I posted this one with fear and trembling.
"Yes, with reservations" seems to be a common thread among the reasonable people I know.
