Okay, I just read Josh Butler’s TGC piece on Sex Won’t Save You (But It Points to the One Who Will). And, well, I do have some thoughts on this. First, there is a legitimate scriptural image for Christ as the husband and the church as the bride (see Ephesians 5 and Revelation 21). There is also an allegorical reading of Song of Songs so that the love between a king and his concubine is like the love between Christ and the church.
Thank you for this quick response to that incredibly disturbing article.
On the 11.10.22 episode of Therapy and Theology with Lysa Terkeurst, Jim Cress LPC affirms the sobering realities of how porn is shaping Evangelical men. Discussing the stats around men and pastors that use porn: “From Barna Research and from our friends at Covenant Eyes for sure at least 50% of Evangelical men- that stat does not discriminate against pastors, it includes pastors - really probably 68 to 74%”. These stats have been around for years and should be the sirens that wake us up to what is shaping our religious institutions from the top down. A pornified religion where the majority of the shepherds are consuming image bearers of God for their sexual, lustful pleasure. Not to mention the reality that this porn epidemic, its extent and reality has largely been hidden from the women (for decades) causing untold damage on so many levels. The TGC article is fruit of this deep-rooted tree that idolizes male sexual gratification and is grounded in the soil of tremendous deception.
Yes thanks so much. Your review was fair and balanced.
This is very helpful. Thanks, Mike.
Thank you, Michael, for a very helpful post on this. I so appreciate being on your Substack and getting to glean all the more from you. I noticed that Rich Villodas has pulled his endorsement, and that Josh was pulled from speaking at an event he was slated to speak at. It seems people are waking up to just how not OK this is.
