It's almost thirty years since he left us, but Ellul was an amazing thinker about church and culture, prophetic in many ways. I once read his book The Power of Money while on retreat, underlining almost everything. Was reading the Meaning of the City last year. Always stimulating and challenging, not a popularist. Thanks for stumbling upon him!
I have really benefited from Jacque Ellul. My first book of his was “The Meaning of the City” which is more misunderstood than grasped. Great book. Of course, “The Technological Bluff” was decades ahead of its time. A good introduction to his thought is a book out of Wheaton - “Understanding Jacques Ellul”- Greenman, (and others). I appreciate his handling of Scripture- quite refreshing. He wrote in French and the books are all translated into English- so some books are better done than others. Anyway, excited you spoke about him.
In 1992 while studying for a BD as an external student at the then MCD I read his book “The Subversion of Christianity “. I still find it helpful in dealing with moralism and the influence of of culture on how the church can pervert the gospel message.

Hi Steve, yes, I'm finding several people who like Ellul.
