I love this advice: Remember, preach Jesus, mentor others, then be forgotten.

Great recommendations. I will never forget Oden's memoirs and have recommended it to others. F.F. Bruce was also one I have recommended as well. Glad I read the book on Ladd, though it was really sad and depressing, but your warning is very apt about working for the praise of others.

I’ll have to add these two books in my list! Personally I’m trying to discern that call of research. I decided to opt out of ordination; feeling the weight of the call and being honest with myself and my temperament, I didn’t feel comfortable going through ordination. I wanted to maintain the church’s peace and purity and believe I could serve more effectively if I’m unencumbered by ordination.

What’s been helpful for me through my schooling is counseling. Having someone who can hear my difficulties and struggles has been helpful. If I do go into research, I definitely will need a support system who will hear me but keep me humble.
