We are to practice חֶסֶד (i.e., social justice, caring for the poor, etc.). But חֶסֶד is not the kingdom. We practice חֶסֶד because God’s חֶסֶד towards us and ultimately because, as you said, Dr. Bird, of the promise and certainty of the eschatological kingdom.
